Spinal stenosis occurs when the space around the spinal canal narrows, this can be due to degenerative changes leading to bony osteophytes and spurs (bony projections) narrowing the space where the spinal nerves travel.
The symptoms of this painful condition often present after you have walked for a set distance, when pain and weakness occur in one or both legs. This pain settles with rest.
Spinal stenosis pain in the neck is called cervical spinal stenosis. This condition means that there is potential compression of the spinal cord. Unfortunately, the spinal cord compression can lead to serious problems such as extreme weakness, or even paralysis. With cervical stenosis, anyone who develops signs of spinal cord compression (myelopathy) may need more invasive treatment, such as surgery.
Osteopathy and Acupuncture can contribute to relieving the symptoms of this painful condition.
Should the pain and weakness not respond, referral may be necessary to see whether surgery or injection might be of benefit?
